Goryokaku was built to serve as the office of government officials when the Hakodate Port was opened. It was the first time in Japan to have a Western-style fortress. from the appearance of a five-pointed star Therefore it is called Goryokaku. Goryokaku was completed in 1866. but only 2 years later The Shogunate had destroyed it. After that, Hakodate (present-day Hakodate City) has been in use for a short time. It was occupied by the former Shogunate's army and became its headquarters. When entering the Meiji era, the interior of the building was demolished, leaving only one building. It has been used as a training ground for the Japanese Army. After that, it was opened to the public as Goryokaku Park since 1947. And since then, it has become a representative tourist destination of Hakodate and a resting place for residents of Hakodate.
