Introduction - The British Consulate of Hakodate was established in 1859 in Hakodate. It is the third oldest foreign consulate in Japan after the United States and Russia. It was rebuilt by several big fires and became the current building. The building was used as a consulate from 1913 to 1934. Currently, it is open to the public as the Port Opening Memorial Hall.
