Monastery The Trappist Beer Monastery of Our Lady of Angels is a convent of the Trappist Society (Trapiststine Monastery) in the suburbs of Hakodate City, Hokkaido. Also known as the Angel Garden. Founded in 1898 by eight nuns dispatched from France, it is the first contemplative convent in Japan. Men are not allowed inside the monastery. Cookies, candies, butter and jam sold as souvenirs are famous. In addition, soft serve ice cream with a rich milk that can be eaten in the garden is popular.
