Sapporo City is capital city and the political, economic, and cultural center of Hokkaido with 1.96 million population. The name "Sapporo" is given by Ainu, the Indigenous people in Northern Japan. "Polo" means "big" in the Ainu language. The meaning of "Satsu" is not clear. Sapporo Olympics, the first winter Olympics in Asia, was held in 1972 and the city became known worldwide.

The development of Hokkaido is relatively new in the history of Japan. The big settlement of pioneers from Honsyu, main land of Japan, began end of the 19th century. For this reason, even now, some Japanese have an image of pioneering in Hokkaido and Sapporo. The city's symbol Sapporo Clock Tower was the Sapporo Agricultural College, which was the first western style university for young pioneers in Japan 150 years ago.

Sapporo is also a base for sightseeing in Hokkaido, and most of tourists stay in the city. There are many tourists as well as citizens in Susukino, around Sapporo Station and Odori Park.
