Noboribetsu sightseeing in summer

Noboribetsu is a city in the south-central part of Hokkaido. The name has derived from the Ainu word "Nupurupetsu" (dark river). The reason is calcareous hot spring water flows into the river and the color of the river views like cloudy.

The center of Noboribetsu tourism is Noboribetsu Onsen and Karurusu Onsen, which is situated in the eastern part of the city, and it has designated as Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Noboribetsu Onsen is one of the leading hot spring areas in Hokkaido, and it is famous since the Edo period.

Jigokudani, a famous tourist spot in Noboribetsu, is a group of explosion craters created by the eruption of Mt. Hiwa. There are many fumarole outlets, and it has come to be called "Jigokudani" because it looks like it is bubbling and boiling. At the end of Jigokudani, there is a large Oyunuma Pond, formed by the accumulation of hot water at the site of the explosion crater, which raises the smoke. The area around Jigokudani and Oyunuma is also known as one of Japan's leading spots for autumn leaves.

Noboribetsu Bear Park is famous as an attraction. As many as 100 brown bears are grazing on the ranch at the top of the mountain. Also, at Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura, a theme park that reproduces the cityscape and culture of the Edo period, you can experience old Japan as a resident there. Ninja action shows are also held, and it is also popular with foreign tourists.

In Shiraoi Town, which is about a 30-minute drive from Noboribetsu, Upopoi, which introduces the history and culture of Ainu, an indigenous people of Hokkaido, opened in 2020. Upopoi means "singing in large numbers" in the Ainu language. You can enjoy various hands-on activities and traditional Ainu songs and dances.
