The Historical Village of Hokkaido is an open-air museum in Sapporo. 52 historic buildings have been relocated or recreated on 54 hectares of land. The Ainu people originally lived in Hokkaido, but modern development began in the 1870s, which is relatively new. It started with the Meiji Restoration and coincided with the dawn of modern Japan. You can get a glimpse of the lifestyle of the pioneers who settled in Hokkaido from Honshu. It operates a horse-drawn carriage train in the summer and a horse-drawn carriage on weekends and holidays in the winter. It also reproduces annual events during the pioneering era and also carries out activities to hand down the game culture and traditional techniques of that time.
