The Sapporo Clock Tower is a historical building located in central Sapporo and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The official name is "Former Sapporo Agricultural School Performance Hall", and "Sapporo Clock Tower" is a popular name. The plan to build this performance hall was William Wheeler, an American who was the second vice-principal of Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University). It was built for the purpose of training pioneers in preparation for the north guard. This clock tower is Sapporo's most famous tourist attraction and is visited by many tourists. The characteristic appearance of a large clock on a triangular roof is known all over Japan.
