Japan adopted a national isolation policy for more than 200 years during the Edo period, and severely restricted exchanges with foreign countries. However, at the end of the Edo period, the international situation changed drastically, forcing the country to open in 1854. The bases of opening the country were Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, and Hakodate.

When Japan opened in 1854, Hakodate was allowed to call foreign ships, and many foreigners came to visit the port town. And in the process of developing as a trading city, a unique city was created that was a mixture of Japanese and Western culture. The remnants of those days still remain around Motomachi, the center of Hakodate.

At 20:00, we will take you from Daimon Yokomachi to Hakodate Kokusai Hotel by taxi.

The Edo period, when the Tokugawa Shogunate ruled Japan, lasted from 1603 to 265 years. However, under the influence of the drastic changes in the international situation, the Meiji Restoration in 1868 created a new government, and the Edo period came to the end. Immediately after that, the former Shogunate army and the new government army, which were not satisfied with the Meiji Restoration, fought a civil war all over Japan for a year and a half. The battleground was Hakodate, which is called the ”Battle of Hakodate”. A part of the former Shogunate army occupied Hakodate and declared the establishment of an independent country. However, the new government did not admit it, and it was a fierce battle. The Hakodate Goryokaku, which was built as the relocation destination of the Hakodate Magistrate's Office, was used as the fortress.

Hakodate developed as a trading city with the opening of Japan in 1854. In the process, a unique cityscape was formed that mixed Japanese and Western culture. On the other hand, the ruins at the end of the Edo period and during "The Battle of Hakodate" are also preserved. The representative one is Hakodate Goryokaku. The Hakodate Magistrate's Office was dismantled in 1871, but was restored in 2010. The mansion of a Meiji businessman who made a fortune by speculating rice during the Battle of Hakodate still exists. In addition, at the Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples, you can experience the history and culture of the Ainu people, who are the indigenous people of Japan, whose dignity has been neglected due to the development of Hokkaido after the Meiji Restoration.

20:30 The tour bus pick up you at Asari restaurant and take to Hakodate Kokusai Hotel

The first town to visit, Matsumae Town, was once the castle town of the Matsumae Domain and prospered as the political, economic and cultural center of the domain. Matsumae Castle is the only Japanese-style castle in Hokkaido. The castle tower was destroyed by fire, but was rebuilt in 1961.

It is said that Esashi Town, which we will visit next, prospered at the trading port for herring fishing and hinoki cypress (timber) during the Edo period, and was more crowded than Edo in May during the fishing season. At that time, it was the territory of the Matsumae domain of the Edo Shogunate, and was occupied by the former Shogunate army during "The Boshin War", a civil war in Japan that broke out in 1868 (the first year of the Meiji era). At that time, the Kaiyomaru, the main warship of the former Tokugawa Shogunate, sank off the coast of Esashi. The Kaiyomaru has been restored at Esashi Port and has become a tourist attraction. Many old buildings are left in the town, and the atmosphere of the Edo period remains.

After lunch, head to Esashi Town.

Around 18:00, I arrived at Younokawa onsen Yumoto Takuboku-tei. Dinner is served at the hotel.

Let's meet the most popular animals in Hakodate. They are Japanese monkeys entering a hot spring. Very cute and photogenic. After that, We go to the top of the mountain of Hakodate Nanae Snow Park by take speed gondola, and have lunch at the cafe with a very nice view. Then, experience smelt fishing and playing in the snow on the frozen Onuma Lake. You enjoy eating the fishes those are cooked as tempura at the site. You can also run on the snow with a snowmobile around the lake.

Onuma National Park is a wetland registered under the Ramsar Convention, and in winter, birds from Russia visit for wintering. Part of the lake has a stream of water and does not freeze even in winter. It is a habitat for migratory birds, and you can see many migratory birds up close. If you are lucky, you can also see large swans.

The tour bus will pick you up at Yunokawa Onsen Takubokutei at 9:00.

A sightseeing bus will pick you up in front of the Nanae Gondola at 16:30 and to the Onuma Park Tourist Information Center at 17:00 and send you off to Yunokawa Onsen Saiki-tei. Dinner is served at the hotel.

The checkout time of the hotel is at 10:00. If you exceed this time to checkout, you have to pay extra fee according to the hotel regulations. We will take you by taxi to Hakodate Airport, Hakodate Station and so on under the arrangement of our tour guide. At the time you leave the hotel, the tour will end and split up.
